How a battery actually fits in
It sits between where the electricity comes from and where it gets used, and it makes that decision several hundred times a day without you.

It fills when power is cheap
From the panels through the middle of the day, or from the grid overnight if you are on a time-of-use tariff and the unit rate drops.
The house draws from it first
When the kettle goes on at seven in the evening, the electricity comes out of the battery rather than off the meter.
It tops up from the grid if it has to
On a dull week in January there is less to store. The battery still shifts what it can into the expensive hours.
What is left still gets exported
Once the battery is full, surplus generation goes to the grid and your supplier pays for it under the Smart Export Guarantee.
What goes in, and where
Four things, and only one of them needs somewhere to live.

The battery
A cabinet about the size of a small fridge. Garage, utility room, loft or an outside wall, wherever the cable run makes sense.

A hybrid inverter, or a second one
If you already have solar, the battery either works with your existing inverter or gets its own. That is the first thing we check.

A meter clamp
A small sensor on the incoming supply so the system knows what the house is drawing and what the roof is making.

The app
Charge level, what is coming in and what is going out, and the schedule if you are on a time-of-use tariff.
Settled at the survey
- How big
- Sized from what you actually use in an evening. A battery bigger than your daily cycle is capacity you have paid for and never turn over.
- Where it goes
- It wants ventilation and a sensible run back to the consumer unit. Garage and utility room are the usual answers; an outside wall works.
- Backup, or not
- Keeping the lights on through a power cut is a specific specification with its own changeover kit. Ask for it and we design for it.
- Retrofit, or together
- Adding storage to an array you already have is routine. Putting both in at once is one visit and one set of scaffolding.

The questions we get asked most
Do I need solar panels to have a battery?
No. On a time-of-use tariff a battery fills overnight at the off-peak rate and runs the house through the day on it. Plenty of our battery installs have no panels at all.
Can I add one to panels I already have?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. Whether it works alongside your existing inverter or wants its own is the first thing we check.
Is there VAT on a battery?
No. Battery storage is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, whether it goes in with panels or on its own.
Will it keep the lights on in a power cut?
Only if it is specified for backup, which needs its own changeover equipment. Say at the survey that it matters and we design for it.
What size do I need?
It comes out of what you use in an evening rather than out of a catalogue. Send us a bill or your smart meter data and we can size it before anyone visits.
How long does a battery take to fit?
Most retrofits are a single day. Going in alongside panels, one to two days including the scaffold.
