It does not make heat. It moves it.

A fridge takes heat out of the inside and puts it outside. A heat pump does the same thing in the other direction, using the outside air as its source.

  1. It takes heat out of the outside air

    There is usable heat in air well below freezing. The unit outside pulls it in across a coil, the same way the back of your fridge gives heat off.

  2. A compressor raises the temperature

    That is the only part that uses meaningful electricity, and it is why one unit in gives three or four units of heat out.

  3. It goes into your radiators and cylinder

    Water round the house at a lower flow temperature than a gas boiler, for longer. The house stays at temperature rather than swinging up and down.

  4. It runs from a thermostat like anything else

    Set it and leave it. A heat pump is happiest running steadily rather than being switched on and off twice a day.

A hot water cylinder

Heat pumps and combi boilers do not mix, so a cylinder goes in if there is not one already. Airing cupboard, loft or garage.

Radiators, where they need it

Lower flow temperature means some radiators want to be larger. The heat loss calculation says which, room by room, before anything is ordered.

Controls

A room thermostat and a schedule, on the wall or on your phone. Set the temperature you want and leave it there.

A full calculation, not a rule of thumb. It decides the size of the unit and which radiators change.

Design and grant

System design, the quotation with the £7,500 already deducted, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application.

Two to four days

Installation

Unit, cylinder, pipework and any radiator changes. Longer than a boiler swap, and planned in advance.

On completion

Commissioning and handover

Balanced, commissioned, registered with MCS, and we walk you through the controls before we leave.

A heat pump wants a service once a year.

Your paperwork, on the day

MCS certificate, commissioning record, electrical certificate and the manufacturer documentation, with MCS registration inside ten working days.

Two years, in writing

Two years in writing, transferable if you sell, and insurance-backed, alongside the manufacturer warranty on the unit.

Annual service

One visit a year keeps the manufacturer warranty valid and the efficiency where the design said it would be.

We attend within five working days, and within 24 hours if you are left without heating or hot water.

The questions we get asked most

Do heat pumps work in winter?

Yes. There is usable heat in air well below freezing, and the units are rated to keep working at low outside temperatures. Output drops as it gets colder, which is what the heat loss calculation accounts for.

Do I need new radiators?

Some, usually not all. A heat pump runs at a lower flow temperature, so a radiator that was adequate for a boiler may need to be larger. The room-by-room calculation tells you which before anything is ordered.

Can I keep my combi boiler?

Not alongside a heat pump. Heat pumps need a hot water cylinder, so if you are on a combi one goes in as part of the job.

How much is the grant, and who applies?

£7,500 towards an air source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. We make the application, and it comes off your quotation rather than arriving later as a rebate.

Is there VAT on a heat pump?

No. Air source heat pumps are zero-rated until 31 March 2027, so there is no VAT on the installation. From 1 April 2027 the rate becomes 5%. The zero rate and the grant are separate, and you get both.

What makes a property eligible?

You own the property, it is in England or Wales, and you are replacing a fossil fuel system — oil, gas, electric or LPG — rather than another heat pump. There is no EPC requirement: the insulation condition went in 2024 and the EPC requirement itself went in April 2026.

Is it noisy?

About the level of a fridge from a few metres away. Position matters, and it is one of the things we settle at the survey.

How long does the installation take?

Two to four days for most houses, depending on whether a cylinder and radiator changes are part of it.

Does it need servicing?

Once a year, which keeps the manufacturer warranty valid and holds the efficiency where the design said it would be.
